The origins of Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens date back to 1765, when the 1st Countess of Ilchester established a walled kitchen garden to supply nearby Abbotsbury Castle. Over the following centuries, the Fox-Strangways family transformed the original site into a world-renowned botanical collection, introducing rare and unusual plants from China, Japan, South Africa, the Himalayas, Chile and the Canary Islands.
Many species were first cultivated in Britain here, helping establish the gardens as one of the country's most significant horticultural destinations. Today, the gardens remain part of the historic Ilchester Estate and continue a gardening legacy spanning more than 250 years.
