During a recent visit to Abbotsbury, I discovered one of the most surprising attractions in Dorset. Hidden within a sheltered valley just a short distance from the Jurassic Coast, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens feels worlds away from the countryside that surrounds it.
If you're looking for a unique day out near Weymouth, this award-winning attraction offers far more than a traditional garden visit. Home to thousands of rare and exotic plants from around the world, the gardens combine winding woodland paths, peaceful ponds and vibrant seasonal displays to create an experience unlike anywhere else in Dorset.
I have visited many gardens over the years, but very few have surprised me quite like Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens.
Arriving in the charming village of Abbotsbury, I expected a pleasant afternoon surrounded by flowers and landscaped borders. Instead, within minutes of stepping through the entrance, I felt as though I had been transported to another part of the world. Towering palms stretched overhead, giant tree ferns lined the pathways and dense exotic planting surrounded me from every direction. It was difficult to believe I was still on Dorset's Jurassic Coast.
What struck me most was the sense of discovery. Every turn seemed to reveal something different. One moment I was wandering beneath lush subtropical foliage, the next I was standing beside a tranquil pond watching dragonflies skim across the water. The gardens encourage visitors to slow down, leave the busy world behind and simply enjoy the beauty around them.
As I explored further, I began to appreciate just how unique these gardens are. Thanks to the sheltered valley and mild coastal climate, plants from far warmer parts of the world thrive here in a way that feels almost impossible for southern England. The variety is remarkable, with colours, textures and shapes changing around every corner.
One of my favourite moments came while sitting beside the water, listening to birdsong and taking in the peaceful surroundings. Despite being one of Dorset's most popular attractions, the gardens never felt crowded. There always seemed to be another hidden pathway, another viewpoint or another quiet corner waiting to be discovered.
By the time I left, several hours had passed without me noticing, and I could have easily stayed longer. Photography enthusiasts will find endless opportunities to capture beautiful landscapes and unusual plants, while gardeners will leave feeling inspired by the incredible collection of species growing throughout the site. Even visitors with little interest in horticulture will appreciate the atmosphere and sense of escape that the gardens provide.
As I walked back towards the exit, it was hard to believe I was still in Dorset. The beautiful greenery and peaceful atmosphere felt more like a subtropical paradise than a traditional English garden.

Combining exotic planting, beautiful scenery and a wonderfully tranquil setting, it offers a memorable experience that reveals a completely different side of Dorset and one that I would happily return to again.
