Visiting Corfe Castle: Why Dorset's Most Iconic Ruins Are an Unforgettable Day Out

Long before I reached the castle itself, I could already see it dominating the skyline.

Perched dramatically above the picture-postcard village of Corfe Castle, its towering stone ruins rise from the Purbeck Hills like something from a storybook. As I walked through the village towards the castle gates, it was impossible not to imagine the kings, knights and defenders who had once stood exactly where I was about to explore.

The moment I walked through the entrance, I realised Corfe Castle is far more than a collection of ancient stones.

Every pathway, crumbling wall and towering arch tells a story. Built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, the castle served as both a royal palace and formidable fortress before being partially destroyed during the English Civil War in 1646. Even today, its dramatic ruins remain some of the most impressive in England.

As I wandered through the castle grounds, I found myself pausing regularly to admire details that are easy to miss, from narrow arrow loops and ancient stone staircases to the famous 'murder holes' that once defended the fortress.

One of the biggest surprises was just how spectacular the views are.

Climbing higher through the ruins rewards you with panoramic views across the Purbeck Hills, the charming village below and the surrounding Dorset countryside. It quickly became one of those places where you instinctively stop, put your camera down for a moment and simply take it all in.

My favourite moment came at the top of the castle, where the breeze carried across the hills while steam trains from the nearby Swanage Railway gently rolled through the valley below. It felt like stepping into another era.

Corfe Castle is an excellent day out for families.

Children can let their imaginations run wild as they explore winding staircases, hidden corners and ancient gateways while discovering stories of kings, queens and legendary battles. Throughout the year, the National Trust hosts seasonal family trails, interactive activities, storytelling events and hands-on experiences that bring the castle's history vividly to life.

There are also plenty of open spaces to enjoy a picnic, while the nearby tea-room and village offer the perfect place to refuel after exploring.

What surprised me most was how much there is to enjoy beyond the ruins themselves.

The picturesque village of Corfe Castle is full of independent cafés, traditional pubs, gift shops and historic cottages, making it easy to spend an entire day exploring the area. Nearby walking routes through the Purbeck Hills offer even more opportunities to discover Dorset's beautiful countryside.

It's one of those places where every corner seems to reveal another perfect photograph.

As I walked back through the village, I couldn't resist looking over my shoulder one last time at the castle standing proudly above the rooftops.

Corfe Castle isn't simply somewhere you visit to learn about history, it's somewhere you experience it. Between the breathtaking views, fascinating stories and unforgettable atmosphere, it's easy to understand why it has become one of Dorset's most treasured landmarks.
