There is something particularly enjoyable about finding somewhere that doesn’t require a packed itinerary.
At The Courtyard Craft Centre in Lytchett Minster, you can arrive for a coffee, wander between independent shops, discover work by Dorset makers and perhaps leave having booked yourself onto a pottery or candle-making workshop.
Set around a characterful courtyard close to Poole, the centre brings together shopping, food and creativity in one relaxed setting - and with free parking and free entry, it makes an easy addition to a day out in this part of Dorset.
Part of the appeal is not quite knowing what you will find.
The businesses are spread around the main courtyard, inside the house and within a separate studio area, so it is worth exploring beyond the first few doors.
For locally made gifts, Buttons & Bows brings together handmade pieces from Dorset makers, while Fiery Fox Candlesspecialises in hand-poured soy candles, wax melts and reed diffusers.
Jewellery, gifts and home accessories can be found at Sarah Storm, while Cockatoo Studio showcases work from more than 40 local crafters.
There are plenty of thoughtful present ideas, but we particularly like that some of the businesses offer something more personal. Cockatoo Studio, for example, also provides services including laser engraving and flower preservation.
A leisurely browse feels even better when there is somewhere good to stop for lunch.
The Cowshed sits at the heart of the centre and offers brunch, lunch, freshly baked cakes, coffee and cocktails.
Run by Charlie and Hazel, the café places an emphasis on produce and food made in-house, with its own chefs and bakers as well as a bespoke coffee blend created with Carve Coffee Roasters.
It means you can easily make more of a visit - perhaps shopping first, followed by lunch, or simply coffee and cake before another wander around the courtyard.
The centre isn’t only about gifts.
At The Pantry, visitors can pick up fruit and vegetables, artisan cheeses, meat, baked goods and other produce.
The shop is run by brothers James and Craig Akers, who are also behind Hundred Aker Honey in Wool. With connections to local beekeeping and butchery, it adds another distinctly Dorset element to the centre.
For locally made skincare, Lytchett Bay Soaps produces small-batch soaps, shampoo bars, facial products and body care, alongside refill options and more considered packaging choices.
One of the best reasons to return is that you do not have to remain a spectator.
Workshops at the centre can include pottery with Tradpots, candle making with Fiery Fox Candles, crochet through Why Knot Wool and soap making with Lytchett Bay Soaps.
The Craft Room also hosts workshops, activities and pop-up shops throughout the year.

What we like most about The Courtyard Craft Centre is the mix.
It isn’t purely a shopping destination and it isn’t simply somewhere to eat. Instead, you can combine several small pleasures in one visit: discovering an independent maker, buying something made locally, stopping for lunch and perhaps finding a new creative hobby along the way.
That slower pace makes it particularly suited to a relaxed weekend afternoon.
