We visited Place Mill on a sunny afternoon, a delightful slice of Christchurch’s history. Tucked away on the picturesque Christchurch Quay, this Anglo-Saxon mill, with roots in the Domesday Book, exudes charm with its weathered Saxon and Tudor brickwork. The setting, where the River Avon meets the River Stour, is serene, perfect for a reflective stroll before stepping inside.
The mill’s compact interior is a treasure trove for history buffs. The replicas of the Great Spur Wheel and millstones are fascinating, offering a tangible glimpse into its past as a corn and cloth mill until 1908. The volunteer staff were warm and knowledgeable, sharing tidbits about the mill’s unique water-powered system. The current art exhibition was a pleasant surprise—local artists’ oil paintings and ceramics added a vibrant, modern contrast to the ancient structure.
Accessibility could be a challenge for those with mobility issues - with a cobbled path and narrow doorways
Due to the conditions of the Mill, Place Mill only opens over summer and opening times vary with the artistic exhibitions it hosts. Please see the Exhibition Schedule for opening times. Note that there may be last-minute changes to opening times as the Mill is staffed by exhibition artists and volunteers.
Overall, Place Mill is a must-visit for anyone exploring Christchurch’s heritage. Pair it with a walk to the nearby Priory or Castle for a perfect half-day outing. It’s a quaint, evocative spot that blends history and local culture beautifully.
