Thursday 1-Sunday 4 October 2026 | Venues across Swanage
Swanage Blues Festival begins October with four days of live blues, roots and soul music spread across pubs, bars and other venues around the seaside town.
The 2026 festival marks its 25th anniversary, giving music lovers another reason to make the journey to Purbeck. Performances take place from the afternoon into the evening, allowing visitors to move between venues and discover different artists along the way.
The combination of live music, coastal surroundings and a lively town-centre atmosphere makes this far more than a conventional one-night concert.
Saturday 3 October 2026 | Shaftesbury town centre
Shaftesbury Carnival returns for a full day of processions, music and community activity.
The carnival has been part of the town’s history since the 19th century and continues to raise money for local charities. The day includes entertainment around the town, an afternoon procession, marching bands and an illuminated evening procession.
Watching colourful carnival entries travel through the historic hilltop town is a memorable way to experience Shaftesbury beyond its famous Gold Hill views.
Monday 12 October 2026 | Sherborne town centre
Pack Monday Fair is one of Dorset’s most distinctive autumn traditions.
Sherborne’s annual street fair fills the town centre with more than 250 stalls, including artisan producers, local food businesses, traditional market traders and community organisations. Visitors can also expect children’s activities, live music, Abbey tours and a traditional fairground.
The fair is held on the first Monday after Old Michaelmas Day and has deep historical roots in the town. Whether you visit for the market, the food or the atmosphere, it is a very different experience from an ordinary weekly market.
Friday 16 October–Sunday 1 November 2026 | Venues across Purbeck and Dorset
Purbeck Film Festival returns with more than two weeks of independent, international, classic and contemporary cinema.
Screenings take place at venues ranging from the Mowlem Theatre and village halls to historic buildings and less conventional locations across Purbeck. Some events also combine films with meals, talks, question-and-answer sessions or other experiences.

Dorchester Literary Festival brings a week of author talks, discussions and special events to the county town.

As darkness falls, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens will be transformed by an immersive seasonal light experience.
October Illuminate places creative lighting throughout the gardens, revealing the paths, plants and unusual landscape in an entirely different way. Running across eight evenings, it offers more flexibility than a single Halloween event and provides an atmospheric option for the October half-term period.
The combination of subtropical planting, autumn darkness and carefully positioned lighting should make this one of Dorset’s most visually distinctive events of the month. Tickets are already on sale, and advance booking is recommended.
