Guide to the Best Walks around Christchurch, Dorset

Boasting reams of natural beauty, Christchurch is an ideal location to go on long, relaxing walks. From St Catherine's Hill to Hengistbury Head's trail, the preserved splendour of some of Christchurch's most stunning spots makes for a cathartic escape from everyday life. 

Tuckton River Walk is a picturesque walk along the River Stour, beginning just off of Tuckton Bridge and ending at Wick Lane. It is mostly flat, with pathed routes and off-lead areas that make it ideal for dog walkers. The river meanders through lush wildlife and scenic flora, making for a quaint, calming walk. 

This easy, 2.1 mile walk is at one of the highest areas in Christchurch, and boasts some rewarding views of the surrounding countryside. St Catherine's Hill is a 35 hectare nature reserve of attractive heathland and coniferous forest, also home to ancient monuments dating as far back as the Bronze Age. Eagle-eyed visitors might spot the old Roman Signal Station or tumuli along the trail, remnants from Christchurch's long and rich history. Overall, the walk offers a relaxing exploration of Christchurch's natural beauty, and a quiet escape from the rest of the bustling town.

Hengistbury Head is a lovely spot to go on a walk and get lost in the beauty of the nature reserve. The 4.2 mile walk between Hengistbury Head car park to Mudeford Sandbank showcases the stunning greenery of Withybed Wood, views of the sea from Warren Hill, and the white sands of Mudeford Beach to finish. On average, the circular trail takes 1 hour and 16 minutes to complete, and is generally considered to be an easy, relaxing route for hikers and walkers. Whilst dogs are allowed off-lead, it is advised that owners be mindful of the rare wildlife within the reserve.

2 Riversmeet Walk offers wonderful views across the harbour, as well as beautiful wildflower grasslands to explore. Stretching from Stanpit Rec to the 2 Riversmeet Leisure Centre, the trail is a favourite of dog walkers due to its ease of access, off-lead areas, and wide, scenic pathways along parts of the route.
