Weekly Events

The Regent first opened in 1931 as the Regent Super Cinema and has remained one of Christchurch’s most recognisable cultural landmarks. After operating as a bingo hall during the 1970s and early 1980s, the building was revived as a community venue in 1983.
Today, the 505-seat cinema and theatre presents a varied programme of films, live performances and special screenings. Visitors can see new cinema releases alongside comedy, live music, musicals, dance, family entertainment, talks, opera, ballet and theatre broadcasts. Local societies and performers also form an important part of the programme.

The programme changes throughout the year and combines cinema screenings with touring productions and one-off events. Regular categories include:
New film releases and classic cinema
Live music and tribute shows
Comedy and spoken-word events
Musicals, dance and local theatre productions
National Theatre, opera and ballet screenings
Family shows and pantomime
Silver Screen performances
Subtitled, relaxed and BSL-interpreted events where scheduled
Standard cinema tickets currently cost £9.30 for adults and £8.30 for eligible concessions, including over-60s, under-16s, students and Blue Light Card holders.
Event cinema tickets currently cost £20 for adults and £19 for eligible concessions. Specialist cinema events and live theatre productions are priced individually. Prices and available concessions can change, so check the selected performance before booking.
Tickets can be booked online, by telephone or at the box office. E-tickets are normally sent by email and can be displayed on a mobile device. Printed tickets can also be collected from the box office before the performance.
The Regent Café Bar is located in the foyer and is open Monday to Friday from 10am-1pm, serving hot drinks and light snacks.
The venue’s bars normally open 30 minutes before performances. Depending on the event, drinks and snacks may be available from the Café Bar, Stalls Bar or Circle Bar. Visitors attending a live performance can pre-order interval drinks after arriving.
The Regent offers four wheelchair bays at the rear of the stalls in row U, an accessible toilet and step-free access through the main High Street box-office entrance. Stair lifts connect the foyer’s split levels, while an alternative step-free entrance to the stalls can be arranged with the front-of-house team.
The Circle and Circle Bar can only be reached by two flights of stairs. The foyer stair lifts cannot be used while standing or with mobility scooters, so visitors with specific access requirements should contact the venue before booking.
Other access provisions include:
Regular subtitled film screenings
An infrared system providing audio description and audio enhancement for supported cinema screenings
Relaxed performances when included in the programme
BSL-interpreted performances when scheduled
Assistance dogs welcomed throughout the venue, including the auditorium
Accessible performances can be selected using the filters on the official What’s On page.
