Christmas in Dorset brings together sparkling coastal towns, traditional markets, historic houses and memorable family experiences.
Whether you want to skate beneath the lights in Bournemouth, meet Father Christmas aboard a heritage railway or browse stalls in one of Dorset’s market towns, there are festive events taking place throughout the county.
Some programmes and dates are still being announced. This guide will be updated as organisers confirm further details.
Bournemouth hosts one of Dorset’s biggest Christmas celebrations, transforming the town centre and Lower Gardens into a lively winter destination.
Christmas in Bournemouth is due to run from 13 November 2026 until 4 January 2027. Visitors can expect the return of seasonal attractions, festive food and drink and entertainment in the heart of the town.
Skate Bournemouth is returning with a larger ice rink and a magical ice path through the Lower Gardens. The neighbouring Alpine Bar provides somewhere warm to enjoy a drink before or after skating.

Poole combines its historic Old Town and harbour setting with illuminated displays, live entertainment and seasonal activities.
The town’s Christmas programme traditionally extends from Lighthouse Poole through the High Street and Old Town towards Poole Quay. The complete dates and route for the 2026 Christmas light trail are still awaiting confirmation.
One event already confirmed is Jack and the Beanstalk at Lighthouse Poole. The family pantomime runs from 10 December 2026 until 3 January 2027 and stars CBeebies presenter Chris Jarvis. The Christmas Orchestra is also returning to St James’ Church for an atmospheric illuminated performance of seasonal music.

Christchurch welcomes Christmas with a town-centre celebration on Saturday 28 November 2026.
The event is planned to take place between Christchurch High Street, the Old Town Hall and Saxon Square. Local artisan traders are being recruited, with seasonal shopping, food, family activities and entertainment expected before the official Christmas lights switch-on.

The Father Christmas Yuletide Express returns to Swanage Railway from 28 November 2026.
Families can travel aboard a heritage train, join the elves for festive entertainment and meet Father Christmas during the journey. Standard seating prices for 2026 have been held at the previous year’s rates.
Additional steam services are expected to operate between Swanage, Corfe Castle and Norden, making it possible to combine the experience with a visit to Purbeck.
The railway is also planning Christmas Carol Trains, including a journey to Corfe Castle on Thursday 3 December 2026.
Tickets should be booked in advance directly through Swanage Railway.
Swanage Rotary Christmas Market is scheduled for Saturday 5 December 2026.
The market offers an opportunity to browse seasonal gifts, crafts and local produce while enjoying the atmosphere of this traditional seaside town.

Kingston Lacy’s theme for 2026 is A Starlit Christmas Ball.
The house will be decorated for a spectacular ball inspired by the winter night sky. Visitors will follow a seasonal story through the State floor, accompanied by elaborate costumes, sparkling decorations and festive displays.
Outside, lights and lanterns will illuminate the Fernery and surrounding winter garden.
Visitor numbers inside the house are limited and queues can be longer during the morning, so an afternoon visit may be quieter.
Relaxed storytelling sessions with Santa are also planned on selected dates during December. These include a Christmas story, an early gift and an opportunity to take a photograph.
Corfe Castle provides one of Dorset’s most atmospheric settings for a festive day out.
The National Trust’s 2026 programme includes seasonal scenes among the ruins, family craft activities and opportunities to toast marshmallows around the firepits. Selected evening openings will allow visitors to experience the castle after dark.
Exact dates, admission prices and booking arrangements should be checked with the National Trust before visiting.
A trip to Corfe Castle can also be combined with a journey on the nearby Swanage Railway.
Sherborne’s historic streets, independent shops and abbey make it a particularly attractive Dorset destination during December.
Christmas celebrations are expected on Sunday 6 December 2026, accompanied by seasonal shopping and the town’s festive lights.
The Christmas Tree Festival at Cheap Street Church is planned to run from 6-13 December, while Sherborne Abbey provides a beautiful setting for seasonal services and music.

The Dorchester Christmas Cracker is scheduled for Sunday 13 December 2026.
This popular town-centre event traditionally combines Christmas shopping with market stalls, food, entertainment and activities for families. Full opening times and the 2026 programme should be confirmed before travelling.
A free carol concert will be held in Dorchester’s Borough Gardens at 6.30pm on Thursday 17 December 2026.
Visitors can enjoy live music and sing traditional Christmas carols, with carol books provided. The event is organised by the Friends of Borough Gardens and Dorchester Town Council.
Weymouth’s festive season traditionally begins with entertainment and the illumination of the town’s Christmas lights.
The 2026 light switch-on is expected to take place on Saturday 28 November, although visitors should wait for the final timetable and programme before making a special journey.
The town also holds its famous Christmas Day Harbour Swim. Hundreds of swimmers in fancy dress enter the water while spectators gather around Weymouth Harbour to support them.
